Astelit was established in 1992 by Telecom Italia to provide Russian domestic and international telephony and data services both terrestrially and by satellite. Astelit is a joint venture between Telecom Italia and Astra.

Astelit operates a network of fibre, copper and satellite connections internationally and in the Moscow and St Petersburg regions. The satellite network uses Raduga satellites connecting to hubs at Fucino, Italy and at Moscow and St Petersburg.

Astelit uses VSATs to provide long distance private leased circuits to remote regions.
